Purpose: The Camas County Public Library and Board of Trustees desire to provide the community they serve with access to new and emerging technologies, such as 3D printing. It is the Library’s hope that such access will inspire interest in design and curiosity about the opportunities afforded by such technologies.
Policy: The Library’s 3D printer is available to all patrons to make three-dimensional objects based on digital files and using filament provided by the Library. The patron must provide the files, either on a removable storage device or a URL provided on the attached form.
-
The Library’s 3D printer may be used only for legal purposes. The printer is not to be used to create material that is:
-
prohibited by local, state, or federal law;
-
unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others;
-
obscene or otherwise inappropriate for a library environment;
-
in violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, the reproduction of material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
-
-
The Library reserves the right to refuse a 3D print request.
-
Printed objects must be smaller than 9”x6”x6” (the maximum size possible on our printer), and take 5 hours or less to print.
-
Cost: each patron will be allowed one free print per month. Any additional prints will cost .10 per gram, including the weight of support, rafts, and fillers. Payment must be made at the time the object is picked up.
-
Items must be picked up within 7 business days of printing completion or will become property of the Library.
-
The Library is not responsible for the quality of the finished object. We will do our best but cannot guarantee the exactness of the print. If your print requires precision, we suggest you go to a professional printer.
Procedure: It is the responsibility of the patron requesting the print to provide appropriate digital files in .stl format. Library staff is available for assistance only.
-
To submit a request for printing, the attached form must be submitted along with an appropriate digital file. Printing is done on a first-come, first-served basis and the Library reserves the right to schedule only one print per day per person. Payment will be determined based on the date the request is submitted.
-
Same-day printing is not assured. Once a file has been reviewed and readied for printing, the print will be scheduled within a reasonable period of time. Depending on the queue, this could be several days from the time of submission.
-
Design creation:
-
Creation of a new design requires knowledge of 3D modeling software products and CAD (Computer Assisted Drawing). Video tutorials are available on the internet and can be of assistance.
-
Any 3D drafting software may be used to create a design as long as the file can be saved in .stl format.
-
Digital designs are also available from various file-sharing databases such as Thingiverse.com and Yeggi.com
-
-
The design must be applicable for printing with PLA filament, which is provided by the Library. It must be versatile to the selection of filament available at the Library at the time of printing.
-
Files submitted and pre-approved for printing will be readied by Library staff using authorized slicing software.
-
Print times are estimates and cannot be guaranteed. Print jobs over five hours will be resliced to accommodate the time constraints or will be canceled. If reslicing is unacceptable (for example, if the size of the object is necessary for its use), the patron must note that on the submission form.
-
Library staff will do basic cleaning of the printed item, e.g. removing rafts and supports. Any smoothing or assembly of the object will be the responsibility of the patron.
-
Except in cases of mechanical failure, objects failing to fully print, errors in the print process, or other factors not in a patron’s control, patrons are expected to pay for completed objects and may not demand a new print in place of the original due to dissatisfaction with color, scale, quality, design, required support material, or other options pre-selected by the patron.
The Library reserves the right to revisit and revise this policy (including the cost of printing for patrons) at any time as is deemed necessary by the Library Director and Board of Trustees.
Please note that there is no guarantee of privacy. Submitted files will be observed by the Library staff as well as possibly by patrons using the Library while the object is being printed.
The Library is not responsible for any object created with the use of the 3D printer, including harm or injury incurred as a result of the use of the printed object.
